1982 Porsche 911 SC Coupe RoW w/ Sunroof
Time to sell my 1982 911SC Coupe RoW that I’ve owned for 34 years. It’s a project car that runs well but is in need of a clutch, paint and other project fixes — and ready for a new owner to customize to his/her liking and fulfill its potential.
- Grand Prix white (code 908)
- Black interior
- 158k miles (52k on rebuilt engine)
- Asking: $37,000 obo
- Located: San Diego, CA (a CA car since imported in 1985)
IN A NUTSHELL
This 911SC was my daily driver then a weekend car from 1990-2006. Then I parked it in my garage until 2016 when I “woke it up” to sell but it didn’t work out, and did it again in 2023 when I decided it was definitely time for a new owner to enjoy. The engine has been run multiple times per week since then, and is running well (videos available).
As a RoW (Rest of World / Euro) car, it has:
- 930/10 engine w/ 204hp; 9.8:1 compression ratio; upgraded brass, 28-tube oil cooler; Bosch H4 headlights w/ chrome rings; Bosch amber/red tail light covers (changed out, but sold w/ car); amber side turn indicators; smaller rear bumperettes, etc.
FULL BACKGROUND
I bought this 911 in 1990 in the SF Bay Area with 96K miles as a daily driver. The PO had imported it from Germany in 1985 and ridden it hard, which explained its mechanical condition and paint respray — and why just a year later I fully rebuilt the engine at 106K miles. The work was done by former racer Tom Amon and his team at T&D Performance in Campbell, CA (highly rated on the Pelican boards), and the car roared like new.
It was my daily driver until 1996 (kids) and 150K miles. Then I drove it on weekends until 2006 and 158K miles — when I noticed the clutch starting to go. It was running well.
Due to kids and work (and stupidity), the last 18 years it’s been mostly sitting in my garage. I’ve never seen even a drop of oil on the garage floor before or since. I did “wake it up” in 2016 and did some work on it (replaced ignition control unit & coil, fuel pump & accumulator, etc.) to get it running well again and sell it to a friend, but he changed his mind. So it went back into the garage — until a year ago when I decided to knock out some projects and prep to sell.
I first drove it to get CA smog certification, which it passed on 9/1/23 without a tune-up. The transmission was shifting well on that trip, but the clutch went out right afterward. The registration was just renewed on 9/3/24.
I’ve done about half of the intended projects, but due to the pace of progress it’s time to hand it off to an enthusiast to take it over the finish line. This has included…
- Cleaned and detailed exterior, interior and engine; Repainted front bumper; Replaced bumper smile, impact bumper, front bellows, headlight washer values, and front turn signal covers; Refurbished front valance and fog lights; Replaced frunk and rear deck lid shocks; Cleaned and repainted 7x15 & 8x15 Fuchs
The projects that I haven't knocked out:
YET TO FIX (broken)
Clutch, driver’s seat belt, gas gauge (could be float), radio, back windshield wiper & washer, sun visors, steering column (loose), low-tone horn
YET TO UPDATE (could def be improved):
Paint (respray from PO chipped & wearing off), front seats (recover/replace), Fuchs (refurbish); steering wheel, fiberglass whale tale (repaint), shocks/suspension, driver door handle (sticks), headliner (1 tear), dashboard (2 cracks), sunroof seal (doesn’t leak), back seat deck
There may be other things that I’m missing as it is a 42-year old car, so this car is being sold private-party, as-is, with no warranties implied. So caveat emptor and all that stuff.
I had all the service documentation gathered together several months ago, but frustratingly misplaced it when reorganizing my office and garage. I hope to find it all this weekend as I make a concerted effort. Meanwhile, I was able to replace the post-2000 docs of service done after my move from the Bay Area to San Diego. But the rebuild docs from while I was in the Bay Area aren’t able to be replaced since Tom Amon sold his shop and the new owners don’t have those records. Tom has agreed to talk to serious inquiries to validate what he did in rebuilds like mine, including…
- Replace Dilivar head studs with steel
- Install Carrera chain tensioners
- Upgraded to Turbo heads, etc.
I have videos of a walk-around, cold start-up, and revving the engine to show this 911SC does more than idle. A clean CARFAX dating back to 1986 is available that shows limited service visits and regular emissions tests that validate all above mileage milestones. The original Import papers are available, as are the Owner Manual and Service Manual in English and German (i.e., two Manuals). The original Porsche tool set and air compressor are as well, but are in used condition. Amber/red Euro tail light covers and sugar scoop chrome headlights are also included.
